Dear Prospective Students:
Welcome to the Department of Dance at the University of Georgia! I hope that you are enjoying our new website and will spend some time exploring all of the “web tabs” describing the wonderful things that our department has to offer!! You will see that we have seven full-time faculty members, five studios and our very own theatre, the New Dance Theatre, within the Dance Building.
DANCE at GEORGIA has much to offer! The UGA Department of Dance has a long-standing tradition of talented and creative student dancers. Dance majors at the University of Georgia complete a dance performance-based curriculum to earn the Bachelor of Arts (A.B.) degree or the Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree. Coursework in ballet and contemporary dance are the primary techniques, with additional courses in jazz, world dance forms, ballroom dance, tap, and pilates. The dance curriculum also includes courses in dance composition (choreography) and performance, as well as courses which illuminate dance's unique connections to science, technology, history, and the other arts. Students also have an option to earn teacher certification with some additional course work.
The pursuit of dance in an academic setting makes considerable demands upon the major student, so personal advising is very important and occurs on a regular basis. The department offers ample opportunity for students to grow as performers, and students receive ongoing assessment of their progress as dancers and artists. Major and minor students gain valuable performance experience in at least one of the department's pre- companies, CORE Concert Contemporary and Aerial Dance Company and the UGA Ballet Ensemble, or other performance opportunities such as the annual Spring Dance Concert, the Young Choreographers Series (student choreography), and Dance Repertory Project.
Criteria for entrance into the major and minor program is first and foremost, acceptance to the University of Georgia through the Office of Admissions. Additionally, the Dance Department requires an audition for acceptance into the major program. Click on the “Admissions and Auditions” tab on the website for more information on the application process.
There is no better way to get to know a university and a department than to visit and take classes! If you find it convenient to visit campus, please be in touch with Ms. Janet Robertson, Recruitment Coordinator, beforehand so that she can arrange an appointment.
We invite you to - Come DANCE with us at UGA!!
With best Wishes,
Professor and Department Head
