Dear Prospective Students:
Welcome to the Department of Dance at the University of Georgia! I hope that you are enjoying exploring our website and will spend some time checking out all of the “web tabs” describing the wonderful things that our department has to offer! You will see that we have eight full-time faculty members (and additional part-time faculty), four studios and our very own theatre, the New Dance Theatre, within the Dance Building.
DANCE at GEORGIA has much to offer! The UGA Department of Dance has a long-standing tradition of training and educating talented and creative student dancers. Dance majors at the University of Georgia complete a dance curriculum with coursework in ballet and contemporary dance which are the primary techniques, along with additional elective courses in pointe, jazz, tap, folk dance, ballroom dance, Pilates, and our newest offering, yoga trapeze. The curriculum also includes courses in dance composition (choreography) and performance, as well as courses which illuminate dance's unique connections to science, technology, history, and the other arts. Students also have the option to earn teacher certification with some additional course work.
The pursuit of dance in an academic setting makes considerable demands upon students majoring in dance, so personal advising is very important and occurs on a regular basis. The department offers ample opportunity for students to grow as performers, and students receive ongoing assessment of their progress as dancers and artists. Dance majors and minors gain valuable performance experience through auditions and participation in CORE Contemporary and Aerial Dance, Spring Dance Concert, the Young Choreographers Series (student choreography), and Dance Repertory Project special events.
Criteria for entrance into the major and minor program is first and foremost, acceptance to the University of Georgia through the Office of Admissions. Additionally, the Dance Department requires an audition for acceptance into the major program. Click on the “Admissions and Auditions” tab on the website for more information on the application process.
There is no better way to get to know a university and a department than to visit and take classes! If you find it convenient to visit campus, please be in touch with Mrs. Liz Osborn-Kibbe, Recruitment Coordinator, beforehand so that she can arrange an appointment.
We invite you to - DANCE at UGA!!
With best wishes,
UGA Department of Dance
